5 Low-cost ways to keep yourself healthy

The economic downturn has got most of us worried about money. Health care can become expensive, and many are losing health care coverage due to job losses or the expense of insurance policies. What can you do about this? One important answer is prevention. Most preventative measures are either low cost or free. Additionally, by taking care of your health before you have problems, you can greatly decrease how much you will have to spend on your health in the long run. Even if you already have health issues, the following five tips can help you improve your health.

Some people ask: “can’t you just get a drug or an herb that will take care of it?” Maybe, but that drug may have side effects, and you may need more drugs to take care of those side-effects. Herbs are wonderful, but it’s better if you don’t have to depend on them for the rest of your life, instead of using them when needed for acute situations. As doctors of naturopathic medicine and practitioners of Chinese medicine, we learn the same lesson over and over again, both from the teachers from long ago and seeing what works with our patients today: living healthy matters–it’s no less than the foundation of wellness.

Prevention sounds boring, right? In truth, prevention is really more about living well, living fully, and having fun. That last part is important, so I’ll repeat it: living healthy is fun.
